א) תורת הבעש"ט עה"פ [ברביעי דפ' נצבים] "והי' כי יבאו עליך . . הברכה והקללה . . ושבת עד הוי' אלקיך": לכאו' איך ע"י הברכה יתעורר לתשובה?! ויובן עפ"י משל מבן-כפר שלא התנהג כראוי כלפי המלך אבל המלך מצדו השפיע לו הרבה ברכות וכשהבן-כפר ראה שאע"פ שהוא לא התנהג כדבעי ומ"מ התנהג כך המלך כלפיו, זה מה שעורר אותו להתחרט על מעשיו. ועד"ז ‏–‏ ברכותיו של הקב"ה על אף ההנהגה הבלתי-רצוי' מעוררת את האדם לתשובה. וזה מתאים בכלל לדרך הבעש"ט להתנהג עם כאו"א באופן של "ברכה", וכשמתנהג כך עם יהודי אחר גם ה' מתנהג אתו כך. ב) תורת אדה"ז עה"פ (שם) "ומל ה' אלקיך את לבבך ואת לבב זרעך": הענין ד"ומל הוי' וגו'" הוא הסרת ה"עור דק" שנשאר גם לאחרי ה"ומלתם את ערלת לבבכם", וזה יהי' בעיקר לעת"ל אבל באמת יש ענין זה אצל כל אחד בכל יום בשעת התפלה.

(1) The verse states [at the beginning of sheini of Parashas Nitzavim-Vayelech), “And it will be, when all these things come upon you the blessing and the curse…and you will return to Hashem your G-d…” The Baal Shem Tov taught: seemingly, how does a blessing bring a person to do teshuvah? He explains it with the parable: there was a peasant who acted improperly to the king, and the king responded by bestowing tremendous blessing upon him etc.; when the peasant saw that despite his behavior, the king was treating him this way, he felt true regret for his actions. Similarly, when Hashem bestows blessings upon a Jew despite his behavior – that brings him to do teshuvah. And this aligns with the general approach of the Baal Shem Tov of treating every Jew with “blessings”; when a person treats another Jew this way, Hashem treats him that way, too. (2) The verse states (at the end of sheini): “And Hashem your G-d will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring…” (which forms the acronym Elul). The Alter Rebbe explains: “And Hashem…will circumcise” means the removal of the “thin skin” that remains after “you circumcise the foreskin of your heart”; though this will happen primarily when Moshiach comes, it happens for every Jew every day during davening.
